Summer of Splooge
English is a fabulous language. It only takes 2 things to become a word: wide spread usage and commonly understood meaning. Enough people say a word and agree on its meaning and just like that you have an addition to the dictionary.
Splooge (splooj) n, liquid substance found at the bottom of any trash bag at any event in America
- splooged to be splashed or somehow covered with splooge n.
This is the entry in Webster’s New World Dictionary I would like to see Amoung the cadre of hardcore recyclers in and around Eugene Oregon the word is understood all to well. We spent the summer of 2008 up to our … uh … elbows in it. English is such a great language, I’m already more that half way to that new word in the dictionary. Splooge has a clear, agreed-upon meaning and a group of people are using it on a regular basis. That group gets large enough and Miriam Webster is on the phone with questions about the roots of splooge. At Waste Free Oregon the summer of splooge that ended with the Eugene Celebration in September began in May with the Eugene Marathon. That was appropriate — there were no winners and losers during the summer of splooge — only survivors.
Waste Free Oregon is an event recycling company. You might say we specialize is splooge. In a way it is a bi-product of what we do. We don’t make splooge but we do make it noticeable.
